Everyone filters what they see through a lens; some filter through tradition, others through memories, still others through wishes. For photographers, the lens is their unique view of the world. Photography as an art has taken countless forms, but when it comes to capturing people on film traditional photography has been posed, stiff and contrived. While those photos serve an immediate purpose–to capture how someone looks at a given moment–traditional photography fails to capture what we’re truly crave: the ability to personify someone in print.

Enter Lifestyle Photography, a radical take on portraiture. Radical because it embraces the imperfections and unique features that make each and every subject beautiful and eschews the outdated thought that only primped is pretty. When’s the last time life paused exactly when you wanted it to without disturbing your entire rhythm? We all know that’s  not possible, yet our first instinct when we want to capture a moment in time is to grab a camera and say those two little words….’say cheese!’

There’s some value to that, of course. If the goal is to simply document an event, to give proof that we were, indeed, at a certain place at a certain time, then that simple command gets the job done. But the outcome–the snapshots that result–are typically as uninspired and trite as the request itself.

Where life really happens is in those moments that hide in plain sight. The mood, the tone, the looks that defy words; that’s what true lifestyle photographers capture in print. Sure, there’s the technical talk of shutter speed and other perks of using a professional camera. But it’s what’s behind the camera that really matters.

What’s behind the camera is me. My history as a mom, daughter, wife, educator and friend. My drive to recognize the untold stories and give them voice through photos reminds me to keep looking past the surface to what really matters: the story behind the capture.
